Hello topper nation, it’s that time again where we analyze the most intriguing match ups for this season’s intramural basketball playoff brackets. We’ll take a look at CoRec first:
Semi Final Game 1 – WKU DPT vs. Lady Topper Elite – While WKU DPT comes in with a lot of depth on the bench, Lady Topper Elite brings in the best scoring offense in the CoRec league: scoring over 52 points per game. Expect a high scoring game with Lady Topper Elite pulling away at the end with some clutch free throws.
Semi Final Game 2 – The Money Team vs. SAE/KD – The Money Team has the athleticism to compete with any team, anywhere, anytime. This game will be no exception. The SAE men’s team and the Kappa Delta women’s team are both down in talent this season, which may lead to a lot of fast break opportunities for the Money Team. Don’t expect SAE/KD to lie down, but you’ll be foolish to pick against the Money Team is this match up.
Men’s Division II
18 teams were able to advance on to the Division II playoffs. Team Jacob steps in as the #1 seed, and I see this team walking into the final four with ease. The Heatles (#4 seed) are led by Kellen Fleener and Charles Duncan – this team will be tested early by the #13 seeded Heisenbergs.
***UPSET ALERT*** your classic 5 vs. 12 seed matchup is one you should watch. The 5th seeded Unusual Suspects will tip off against the Mimosa Minutemen, who are seeded at the 12 spot. Mimosa will be returning some key players that were not able to play during the regular season, making this game a death trap for the Unusual Suspects.
Men’s Division I
Last year’s champions Team Win enter the Division I playoffs as a #5 seed and look to have a tough road ahead of them in order to defend the title. The entire D1 bracket is stacked with talent, depth and athleticism to make every game a toss-up pick.
My original pick to win the Division I title, Who’s Next – looks to rebound after a stunning loss to the Kentucky Colts earlier in the season. They will face a tough Mimosa Black team that is looking for vengeance after losing the match up of these teams.
Kappa Delta Green – known for being the dominant force of the women’s league for the last few years – finds themselves as the last seeded team in the women’s bracket. After a disappointing season (0-4), can Whitney Johnson carry the burden of being the underdog? I think so! Leading scorer Kaylin Carpenter for KD should drive straight through the Chi Omega defense and lead KD to a victory.
On the other side of the bracket, WKU soccer looks to skate through the tournament after receiving the only bye.
4 first round byes were given in the fraternity bracket, and 2 belong to FIJI. FIJI fans shouldn’t cheer so loud though, FIJI also received the top seed in flag football last semester and were bounced out of the 1st round faster than oiled pig on a trampoline.
The best match up you’re going to find though may happen in the quarter finals – a rematch of last year’s final game – EX Gold versus SAE Gold. While SAE Gold got the last laugh last year after a 45-44 win in the championship game, EX Gold took the flag football title last fall from SAE and will be looking to repeat the same results for basketball. Definitely two championship caliber teams, but only one will advance to the semifinals!
